Articles in French are words that mean the, a, and a.

  • Definite articles: Le, (masculine/singular)  la (feminine/singular), les (neutral/plural). All mean “The”.
  • Indefinite articles: Un (masculine/singular), une(feminine/singular), des (neutral/plural). All me a/an.
  • Definite articles are used for specific things, while indefinite articles are used for non-specific things
  • Articles must agree in gender and number with the nouns they modify. 
  • Examples include “Le garçon” (The boy) and “Un chat” (A cat)
  • Contraction of “le” and “la” is “L'” and is done before a noun starting with a vowel.
  • Learning the gender of nouns is essential in using articles correctly
